This staple of home exteriors is one variant of PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, which is best known for the piping that is made out of it.
PVC is a particularly versatile substance, since it is what is called a thermoplastic polymer. Thermoplastic is good because it melts into a liquid when hot enough and hardens as it cools, so that it is easy to form into different shapes. Polymer is good because it means its made up of strings of identical parts that naturally cling together, making it very strong.
