Our modern world is filled with synthetic materials of all sorts, plastic being perhaps the most prevalent. Vinyl in its various forms is also common. These materials are scientifically designed to provide the best of adaptability, durability and beauty. That is certainly true of vinyl siding. This staple of home exteriors is one variant of PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, which is best known for the piping that is made out of it.

PVC is a particularly versatile substance, since it is what is called a thermoplastic polymer. Thermoplastic is good because it melts into a liquid when hot enough and hardens as it cools, so that it is easy to form into different shapes. Polymer is good because it means its made up of strings of identical parts that naturally cling together, making it very strong. Vinyl siding is made of uPVC, or Rigid PVC, which has the added the characteristic of firmness.

To begin with, the uPVC is melted down, and color pigments added. Then it is extruded into long sheets which have a textured pattern of some sort embossed onto them. Very often it will be some sort of wood-grain pattern, to help the panels look more like wood. This also helps to reduce its natural sheen. While still warm, the sheets are cut into panels, and then allowed to cool. Other chemicals can be added during the process, some designed to make the panels stronger, some to give them UV and fading resistance. Every manufacturer has its own particular blend. Later, after theyve cooled, the backing is added. Cheap vinyl siding has Styrofoam backing, while the highest grades have considerable amounts of insulation.

The result is attractive panels of weather-resistance siding which is inexpensive, long lasting, and does not require painting. It is waterproof, easy to maintain, and does not show scratches. The higher quality you buy, the more durable it will be, and the longer its bright color will last. Many brands of vinyl siding come with 50 year and even lifetime guarantees, reflecting the confidence of their manufacturers in the virtues of this particular PVC product.
